Colin Baker to appear as Morse

Colin Baker is set to appear as Inspector Morse in a new stage play by Alma Cullen (author of four Morse screenplays), called the House of Ghosts.

The stage play, the first since the passing of John Thaw who played the character of Morse on screen between 1987 and 2000, premieres on 27 August 2010 at Stevenage’s Gordon Craig Theatre before touring, until 4 December, to 14 other theatres, including 2 nights at the Grand Opera House in York from 16 to 18 September.

Animated Norton annoys Who fans

The 'tinterweb is alive with angry and annoyed Whovians over the BBC's animated on screen caption of Graham Norton, that was shown over the cliffhanger in the last few minutes of yesterdays episode.

There are many thousands of disappointed people out there who felt that the emotion and drama that built up in Matt Smith's dialogue, during the final minutes on screen, were wiped out when the cheeky little animation minced on screen on BBC One.

The BBC HD broadcast was unaffected.

A BBC spokesman said: "We apologies for the timing of Saturday night's trail." The BBC often promotes programs in this way but the corporation has acknowledged that in this case the scheduling was inappropriate.

The Prisoner - Fabulous or Flop?

I started watching the US remake of The Prisoner last week, but after watching the first episode on ITV, I was left undecided as to what to make of it.

As with my previous post about the V remake, I had heard lots of chatter from US fans, and some UK fans that had downloaded it, that it was a poor copy and just didn’t stand up to the original. Putting all that aside, and wanting to make my own conclusions, I have been watching with an open mind.

So, here I am, episode 2 and I think I’ve found what was making me feel so undecided about it. With the original series there was a certain feeling of claustrophobia and paranoia that came from the filming in Portmeirion, and the general Cold War era that influenced the writing and production.

In the US remake there is very much a feeling of isolation, but not that condensed and enclosed space. Also the paranoia seems to be different. In the original, for me, there was a clear feeling of “I don't know who I can trust” but in this I get a clear “trust no one” which changes the dynamic of the program. This may change as the series progresses, but we shall see.

So, I have made my mind up. I like this remake of The Prisoner. I think Sir Ian McKellen is an inspired piece of casting as No 2, and it is a truly new delve into the tortured human psyche of supposedly knowing you’re not mad, but everyone and everything around you is convincing you that you are. And they still have Rover! Bigger and louder than the original, but still has the chill factor for me!! And they are still right hand drive… Good to see that the Yanks haven’t totally got rid of all the Brit influences!

I hope that The Prisoner does get a shot at a second series, as I’m interested to see where they take it! But knowing how our US friends like to operate, No 6 will eventually escape… For real… Which will be a shame.

This is so tantalisingly gorgeous, the only way I can describe it is like every time I hear Dervla Kirwan's voice on those slutty M&S adverts, I have the urge to rub a Melt-In-The-Middle Chocolate Pudding into my Moobies... But I digress!

US Torchwood on hold?

The BBC News website has a story that the US version of the Who spin-off Torchwood has been put on hold after the Fox TV Network pulled out of the deal with BBC Worldwide.

The BBC is continuing discussions with other networks to get the show made for US audiences.

Strange alien planet? Nope! It's a quarry!!

Imagine my uttermost surprise and delight when I opened the staff Intranet pages at work, to be presented with this lovely image in the "Photo of the Week" section...

No, the TARDIS did not land in a dodgey Photoshop. This is Aberthaw Power Station in Wales which is run by RWE npower.

Last summer, the BBC approached the station requesting permission to use its quarry to film night scenes for an episode of Doctor Who.

It looks like the secrets that the quarry has been hiding will be reveled in episodes four and five on Saturday 24 April and Saturday 1 May, which sees the return of the Weeping Angels and Professor River Song!

A fee was paid to RWE npower for the use of the quarry and to cover the cost of staff involvement. This money has been donated to the local charities Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice, Rhoose & District History Society, Rhoose Boxing Club and Rhoose Lifeguard Club.

To simulcast, or not to simulcast?

This is the question... As an avid campaigner for High Definition, I am forever singing it's praises and encouraging people to make the move from SD to HD. Yes, it can be an expensive initial outlay, but the difference is unbelievable and once you've gone HD, you don't go back.

Now, here is my issue. Last nights episode of Doctor Who was transmitted at 6:30pm on BBC One and 8:25pm on BBC HD. This is the fist time since the programs move to HD that this has occurred.

Miffed, I was. I did watch the broadcast on BBC One at 6:30pm, with the rest of the nation, but felt my enjoyment spoiled somewhat. So, here I am! Sunday morning after rewatching last nights Victory of the Daleks in HD that I recorded last night. It's not just the improved picture quality, but the whole experience is enhanced with full 5.1 surround sound. It brings the whole score to life and adds that extra dimension.

There's nothing quite like hearing a Dalek ask "Would. You. Care. For. Some. Teeeeea?" being enhanced through a sub-woofer! It gives me chills!!

By the looks of next weeks episode, it will be simulcast on BBC One and BBC HD once more. I hope that The Beeb aren't going to make a habit of this.

New Series of V

Having caught up on this weeks telly (oh, the joys of working away from home) I was really keen to see the latest Sci-Fi classic remake from over the pond, V.

Having watched the original series back in the 80's (and owning the complete DVD boxset), I have a great affection for the program as it scared the pants off me at such a young age.

I had some doubts about it, as it basically aired in the US months ago before it came to the UK shores, and the general 'tinterweb chatter comprised of "oh, it's not like the 80's series", "none of the original cast are involved", "should have left a classic well alone", but that got me thinking... That's no different from any other remake that's been done over the last 10 years!

So there I sat, bottle of vino by my side, a full 50" inches of HD goodness, 1,000 Watts of ear-bleeding Surround Sound, and me squweeing to my 7 year old self in anticipation... I can say, I'm impressed!

If you're looking for the skin-ripping, laser-shoot-out-in-the-street, hi-jacking-spacecraft, shoulder-pad-wearing-neo-nazism that is so fundamentally woven into the 80's series, then you'll be sadly disappointed. But this brings a much darker, grittier realism to a seemingly benevolent race of aliens who only seem intent on helping the Human Race (yeah... right).

Having watched the first 2 episodes on SyFy, I can say there is the right balance between character development, scene setting, and action. I am genuinely impressed with what ABC have achieved in this fresh approach.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 80's series! But much like with Battlestar Galactica, I hold it in the highest regard and cherish all the memories I have of the original, but really, REALLY appreciate a good, quality remake, that takes a show in a new direction and brings it to a fresh audience... Now, what does that remind me of?

Doctor Who game coming to PC and Mac

The BBC has reported that Doctor Who will be joining the gaming world with with four interactive episodes of the show.

Matt Smith and Karen Gillian will be providing the voiceovers, and the four two-hour dramas will allow fans to take on the role of the Doctor, enter different universes and fight some new enemies.

The first of these installments should be available to download from the BBC Doctor Who website for free sometime in June.

Well I too am back after a short break due to a slight lifestyle change..... yes folks, I have joined a gym and due to my obsessive compulsive personality I have been going a lot....

Anyways, as Roj said last nights episode was fab and rather than expressing my thoughts on it I would urge you to read what Roj has posted as I agree with everything he says apart from the nonsense about RTD and the End Of Time specials :-)

So for now here is the trailer for what is to come in the next 12 weeks or so. I can't wait and by the way, Matt Smith has nailed the part of the Doctor in my opinion!!

Oh, and by the way, our next meeting for Doctor Who fans in Leeds is next Saturday 10th April at the usual Adelphi pub in the heart of Leeds. We're staring at 12:30 so hope to see you all there!!

Change, my dear!

Well... What can I say? I'm impressed. Not only have we been introduced to a new Doctor, a new companion, a new TARDIS, and a new production team, but also a renewed faith!

I am taking about my own faith, that was trampled on and crushed over the last 6 months by the sloppy, egotistical, and trashy stylings of RTD. It has been a long, emotional roller-coaster for me to see the departure of David Tennant, and for it to be handled so badly really, really upset me. What am I talking about, some of you might be saying? RTD is the best thing since sliced bread, you say? Everything he touches turns to gold, you cry? I'm afraid not, sez I.

Some of you will know how vocal I have been over the last 3 DT specials. To have the hype build prior to the airing, and to be so bitterly disappointed by slap-dash writing and crowbar plot moves just to satisfy the Exec Producers own over-blown ego. My reaction was (apart from the vocalism's at the Leeds WhoDo's) was to withdraw. Shut down. Pull back from "New Who" and lick my wounds.

I became so disillusioned, I stopped visiting forums, news pages, blogs (my first post in 4 months). I didn't want to know about New Who. Didn't want to watch it or read about it. I wanted a blank slate for when the series returned. I was tired of building expectation only to have that expectation dashed when it aired. If I had no expectation then it can only go up from there.

So I immersed myself in Classic Who, and found myself paying particular attention to Colin Baker's first season. I have no idea what drew me to it, but this seclusion over the last 4 months has given me a deeper understanding of his Doctor, and appreciation of what JNT was trying to do... Maybe I will revisit the DT specials in the future, and see what RTD was trying to do? But, I digress.

Tonight, I found I enjoyed Doctor Who more than I have done in a very long time! Wow... Solid writing, exceptional acting, and I got the "hairs on the back of my neck" feeling for the first time since School Reunion, when Sarah-Jane jimmied open the store room and found the TARDIS. Who is back.

Matt Smith pulled off a blinding performance. For me, he brings that uncertainty back into the role. The "not quite sure what he'll do next" feeling to the character, which has been sadly lacking, but I've not noticed it until now... Strange...

So, yes! I have something to say once again. I've found my voice. Is that a good thing?

Dr Who fan day in Leeds

It is a fascinating concept and the BBC did the very same with missing episodes of The Invasion.

How long have you been a member of the group?

My first meeting was way back in November 1987 – almost to the day that Pete Tyler got run over! I remember meeting Phil Collinson who was a good laugh. Phil of course went on to do bigger and better things but not before we made our own amateur Dr Who film in 1989, featuring him as the Doctor and me as the villain! We loved it but it was appalling. You may have read about it in the “Sex, Lies & Videotape” article in DWM last year – it’s the film that David Tennant nicked from Phil’s flat in order to embarrass him at his leaving do in March 2008. Peter Davison was apparently in the audience and said it was the worst thing he had ever seen! David Tennant said he had got his own performance wrong all these years and said Phil had finally shown him how the part should have been played! Phil had to crawl under a table!

The group kept going until about 1993 where there was a lengthy hiatus until 2004 when Neil kick started it back up again. Oh, I forgot, there was a brief revival in 1996 around the time of the Paul McGann movie – I seemed to be the only fan who liked it!

Who is your favourite Doctor and why?

Tom Baker was without a doubt the most memorable and distinctive and he commanded the most authority – that expressive face, those huge eyes, that sumptuous, fruity voice of the Gods. He had a fantastic ability to switch between dramatic seriousness and thigh-slapping funnies like no other actor I know. He was remarkable, trend-setting and way ahead of his time. He was the people’s Time Lord.

Favourite companion?

New series – Rose Tyler – such a soulful performance and Billie’s gorgeous!

Classic series – a toss up between Leela, Sarah Jane, Liz Shaw and the Brig.

Favourite episode?

Too many good ones but I’ll have a go:

New series – I love Father’s Day, The End of the World & Blink. But the best one is I think The Empty Child – fantastic, brooding atmosphere with a really moving ending.

Classic series – particular favourites of mine are Genesis of the Daleks, Deadly Assassin (terrible title, great story), Terror of the Zygons (another terrible title, another great story), Seeds of Doom & Ambassadors of Death, but the best one has to be Caves of Androzani – absolutely gripping from start to finish and with a great cast. I even liked the Magma Monster and it’s little cape!

If you were a God what would you do to the world?

In order to preserve a certain amount of free will and meaning, I would hide little bits of myself inside people’s heads so they could find me if they wanted to look.

Cake or biscuit?

I like both depending on the quality. On the whole, cake probably has the edge.

Last book you ever read?

Dr Who: The Shooting scripts. I write scripts in my spare time. Once I wrote an audio story for Paul McGann’s Doctor and it got as far as Nick Briggs who said he would talk to me about it! But nothing came of it so I’m not sure what happened to it after that despite numerous enquiries on my part. Perhaps Nick thought it was rubbish and didn’t have the heart to tell me?!

What are the contents of your fridge?

Mostly nice stuff but I find I am reluctant to throw food out until it has well and truly gone off - maybe it’s a guilt-trip about the starving millions in Africa? It reminds me of the flawed “clean plate principle” for kids. Contrary to popular parental opinion – eating everything on my plate or from my fridge has been shown to do nothing for the well-being of starving people in Africa.

What did you laugh at so much that stuff came out of your nose?

Moths Ate My Dr Who Scarf with the fabulous Toby Hadoke. I also had a tear in my eye at the end.

What would your Autobiography be about?

How to be the writer, director, producer and main character in the movie entitled “My Life”.

Would you travel to the past or the future?

My only interest is in the future as I’m going to be spending the rest of my life there.

If you had a Superpower what would it be?

Most Superheroes are loners and are dysfunctional and tend to appear in really bad films. Their superpowers don’t make them happy. My superpower would therefore have to be super self-awareness – kind of like Buddha in a cape!

What did you want to be when you were 12 years old?

I wanted to be a bigger Simon. I felt it was inevitable.

What would you do if you suddenly became a fish?

Probably no reaction. Is a fish aware that it swims in water any more than we’re aware that we move through the air? If I had an ounce of Simon left, I would probably get bored after a while, crawl up out of the mud and learn how to walk (where have I heard that before?) and then sprout wings and fly away somewhere. Should only take half a million years or so.

I do not think of myself as a Doctor Who fan, in fact I don't consider myself to be a "fan" of anything really.

Let me explain....... My relationship with Doctor Who started in 1975 or thereabouts. I think the first one I remember was The Arc In Space and I must have been 3 at the time. The Saturday routine in our house back in the 70's was simple. Get up, dressed, fed and then off to the shops. In the afternoon we went swimming then on the way back we would get fish and chips for tea and then get ready for this weeks thrilling instalment of Doctor Who. It was a magical time, being young and witnessing all new episodes of Tom Baker strutting his stuff. I named my goldfish Sarah and Harry. We went to Blackpool to see the museum, my mum knitted me a scarf and at Christmas I got the Doctor Who annual which was my most treasured possession.

That was the start and it continued through my life. Doctor Who only left me for a brief time (about a year) in the 80's when girls became really interesting but it wasn't long before I was watching again.

I am not a fan though. I like things that are good and for me, Doctor Who has always been good and therefore I like it. If it ever disappointed me then I would not like it or watch it, but so far it has never been that bad.

I'm not a fan of Elvis Costello either. I have most of his albums and, for the most part they're all brilliant. However, there are a few which I will never listen to again as I don't like them.

Anyway, I just wanted to get that off my chest..... strange I know!!

Dalek Storm Filming report - Part Two

....... Steve worked Storm really well and knew exactly what type of shots and angles would work well.

Filming then moved onto a classic white corridor scene which could have come straight out of 70's Tom Baker Doctor Who with Alan showing off his mastery of controlling Storm and it's near perfect Dalek movements.

Lighting was always going to be a problem in some of the darker areas of the location however we used it to our advantage by using some of the lighting effects on Storm to stand out in the darkness..... this made some great eerie shots which are going to work well. Unfortunately the lack of light led to Storm having a little collision which we caught on camera and will no doubt feature as an Easter Egg on the DVD release.

Time was moving on at this point so we decided to move outside to take advantage of the light. We got some great footage here as well as the lighting conditions were near perfect.

So, as of today we're still at the very early stages of this project, with post production, sound design and final edits to complete. But, so far so good and as a special treat here is a very early teaser trailer for what is to come. Please bear in mind that it is in a very raw state and I will be re writing my music as I'm not 100% happy with it yet......... Hope you enjoy and let us know what you think......... Nick.

Bill Nighy in new series

Digital Spy have reported that the legendary British actor Bill Nighy will appear in the next series in an episode also featuring Van Gogh.

Bill has regularly been associated with the possibility that he might end up playing the good Doctor himself one day so it will be great to see the great man in an episode.

Now, I have my fingers crossed for Patrick Stewart!!

Dalek Storm Filming report - Part One

On Saturday 30th January 2010 filming began for a new short film featuring the legendary Dalek Storm.

It had been discussed and decided that the only way to raise the profile of Storm would be to have some high quality footage and pictures to show the rest of the world (and the BBC) that Storm should be taken seriously.

To this end Alan Clark (Storm's creator), Steve Dutton ( professional photographer and cameraman), Alan's partner, Raymond Hyde (Dalek builder) and myself all met up at Magna in Sheffield which had been booked by Ray as the location for the shoot.

Steve & I drove down together and arrived at about 10:20am where we met Alan and co in the car park still assembling Storm. It was cold, very cold so Steve & I decided to grab a hot drink and look at possible area's within Magna which would be good to film in.

20 minutes later we all convened in the entrance and were told that Storm was too big to fit in any of the lifts and therefore the only way we could film on the upper levels would be to take Storm apart and then re assemble - a process totaling 1 hour. Therefore we decided to attempt to get all the footage shot downstairs and outside the building.

The first set of shots were taken against a brightly lit background with Storm performing various maneuvers and we made sure that we had enough to create some special effect which would be added later in post production.

Dalek Storm Filming

Storm, the hardest of all Daleks is to appear in a short promotional video featuring some original music specifically written for Storm. The filming took place today in High Definition at a secret location and will be edited over the next month. When the final edit is done it will be off to a top London studio for the final finishing process.

There will be regular updates on this site so please check back so you can follow it's development. We're hoping that this will be the start of many good things for Dalek Storm.

Leeds Doctor Who Fan Group

Yesterday's monthly meeting at the Adelphi pub in Leeds was a little quieter that normal due to the adverse weather conditions. When I say "quieter" I mean in terms of number of people turning up..... however, "quiet" would certainly not be an appropriate word to describe the event itself. Amongst other topics discussed, there was a lively debate about The End Of Time parts 1 & 2 which proved to have made an impression on all concerned.

At around 5pm we all moved onto another pub as it was happy hour which meant cheap drinks. The conversation soon moved away from Doctor Who to subject matters which I would certainly not want to discuss an a family friendly Blog such as this.....

All in all it was a fantastic day spent in the company of good friends and everyone was on really good form.

Well, what can I say? It was brilliant, so very very good but I was expecting so much more. RTD delivered a fantastic script, David and Bernard and James Bond and John Simm were amazing but where were the really big plot twists.....?

I can't complain really - we should be thankful for a brilliant piece of television once again. Ring out the old and ring in the new!!

And so, the end is near.

It is 17:56 with less that an hour to go before the finale begins. It is the end of an era in which Doctor Who has changed television in so many ways. So many people are responsible but surely top honours should go to RTD and DT?

I want to say thanks guys for giving me, my son's and millions of people so much pleasure over the last 5 years and good luck in everything you do for the future.

There will be a post later on tonight after the Confidential episode.

The official Doctor Who website is promising lots of extra goodies following the end of tomorrows episode. This is what they have to say.....

Well, I suspect that we're all excited about tomorrows final episode for the 10th Doctor and following my predictions for the End of Time part 1 I have been guessing what might happen in the finale.... so here goes and lets see if I'm right tomorrow.......

Wilf will be exposed as a Timelord currently in Human form and protected by the Chameleon Arch
The Daleks will make an appearance as it is clear that some of the action takes place at the Time War
Davros will also make an appearance
There will be some kind of trial
There might (possibly) be some kind of reset so the 9th & 10th Doctors never existed (RTD & DT have always suggested that there might not actually be a regeneration in the way we're used to so this would explain things)
The Time War story arc is resolved so the new production team don't need to worry about explaining it.

As I said, this is all speculation and I could be wrong but you never know.....

And before I forget, wishing you all a fantastic New Year and all the best for 2010....

....... Speculation, speculate, ponder and debate. What is going to happen in the End of Time? I have no idea however a few things have been on my mind recently, so do you mind me sharing them with you?

No? Well thank you. Here are my probably way off the mark theories and idea's.....

Firstly we should consider that Russell T is a fan and as such has written some big fan pleasing moments. Daleks Vs Cybermen, Sarah Jane being recognised by Davros, the Macra making an appearance to name but a few.

Now ask yourselves what he has not done and then consider that it his final story (for the time being anyway).

Also consider that he was the one who introduced the "Time War" plot - a thread which has never fully been explored or developed and, I assume the Moffatt will not want the job of explaining any of that.

So, does this mean the the final episodes will include some kind of Time War theme with a resurrection of Gallifrey (and the Time Lords), an appearance of Doctors 8 & 9 and (possibly) Tom Baker?

He has promised the biggest story ever and let's face it, it would need at least some of the above to top Stolen Earth / Journeys End and I for one can only assume that at least one of the above has to feature.....

I have just realised that this will seem really silly on New Years Day 2010..... Oh well, fingers crossed!!

So, David is leaving soon and I for one am starting to feel quite sad about it. In some ways it takes me back to when Tom left all those years ago. You see, Tom was the only Doctor I had known in my short lifetime when he regenerated and for me it was a great loss. It will be the same for my son George who has grown up with David Tennant and I'm sure that he will be sad too on New Years day.

I don't think anyone can underestimate the contribution to not only Doctor Who but the best in British television David has made. So make sure you all raise a glass and toast him when the fateful day arrives and also have a drink to the new team. I just know they will be fantastic too....

In the meantime here is Tom leaving...... it still gets me even now....

K9 Regeneration

Patrick Stewart to be Knighted?

Digital Spy have a article that 69 year old Star Trek and X-Men legend Patrick Stewart will be knighted in the New Years Honors List.

According to The Mirror, sources at Buckingham Palace claim that the Queen is an admirer "He is a man at the very top of his trade who has mastered both popular TV and classic roles," the source said.

I do apologise for this post having nothing to do with Doctor Who but it really has to be said......

I am amongst many things a fan of the Beatles and everything they have done to change the world with their music and songwriting brilliance. They have been inspirational icons to millions around the world for half a decade now.

So why then did Sir Paul McCartney feel the need to appear on the X Factor on Sunday night? This staged money making scam which passes for entertainment is the antithesis of everything the Beatles stood for, namely talent, real talent.

Sylvester McCoy in rock band video??

Leeds based rock band The Red Pill played a gig in November 2009 at a Doctor Who fans convention in Manchester, for which they'd specially recorded a limited edition CD, "Bigger on The Inside".

Sylvester McCoy bought a copy of the EP at the convention (which the band offered to give him for free, but he insisted on paying), and they were approached by a filmmaker who offered to film a video free of charge, for the Doctor Who themed track.

The band are quoted as saying "In fact, Sylvester McCoy - who played Doctor Who in the 1980s, bought a copy. We offered him a free copy but he insisted on paying for it - what a nice man! We're hoping that Sylvester will be able to appear in the video, alongside his old sidekick, Sophie Aldred."

Oooh, toughie... Tegan Jovanka. I'm always drawn to bolshy, loud mouth, no nonsense kinda people and Tegan is up there! Followed closely by Donna Noble and Ace.

The 'Family of Blood' 2-parter. Very original story, well-realised and produced.

1-Make it absolutely clear what 'the word of God' is, so there'd be no way fighting, persecution or genocide could be passed off as being a religious matter, and keep reminding those who might tend to forget.

After the initial shock and coming to terms with finding that I wasn't going to drown, I'd probably thoroughly enjoy discovering the new slant on my life before getting thoroughly depressed about all the stuff fish can't do. John Simm to take on Hamlet

John Simm has been confirmed to take on the role of Hamlet at the Sheffield Crucible in September 2010 following a £15.8m redevelopment of the theatre.

The BBC News website confirms that Simm will be following in the footsteps of David Tennant, Jude Law, and Christopher Eccleston as the latest high profile actor to play the Danish prince.

Whatever happened to Shada?

The BBC News website has an interesting article around the mystery of why Shada was never completed.

Every Whovian knows the story around the 1979 strike at the BBC that caused the production to be halted, but it goes on to say that the BBC has faced industrial action like that in the past, and it never stopped them from remounting and completing unfinished serials before, so why this one?

It also takes a look at two other programs, The Professionals and Secret Army, that suffered the same fate during 1978 and 1979 and throws up some interesting theories!

I’d like to meet Christopher Marlowe as I’m a big fan, so I’d go back to when he was alive

As part of the Doctor WHo night in 1999, Mark Gatiss and David Walliams performed in this sketch called The Web of Caves. Mark would of course go on to write for the show and appear in an episode.

Hopefully David will one day appear himself.

Sarah Jane Smith – I grew up with her, and she is always special to me

Donna Noble – She’s a mature companion and can give The Doctor a run for his money. Plus Catherine Tate is just stunning!

The Talons of Weng-Chiang – It’s so well written and acted, it just works (except for the rat)
